Beat pseudoscience through academic debate, not silence
In a polarized, post-truth era where information — sometimes deliberately manipulative — spreads through social media, pseudoscience is a huge challenge, though nothing new historically. In everyday life the first step is checking whether information is true or false. Within academia there should be no place for pseudoscience, since its members have knowledge and responsibility, but non-academic guests are sometimes invited, which is valuable for offering a different angle even when their views aren’t fully scientific — so one should be clear about the character and purpose of such meetings. When pseudoscience does appear, one should react — but not by neglecting or silencing the person. The best way to fight pseudoscience is in academic debate, by showing scientific arguments; that is the only way to win.
