Evolution, not revolution — toward modular, micro-credential curricula
This is not the eve of a revolution but the middle of an interesting evolution, with more flexibility offered to students. On the needs side: a more diverse student body in terms of life stage and expectations (many don’t begin right after high school), and a volatile, interconnected, highly mobile job market — together raising demand for personalized education. On the opportunities side: new technological tools and greater internationalization that let programs blend solutions across universities. Structured programs will remain where essential, such as medicine and law, but future curricula may look more like a transferable list of micro-credentials from which students build their own story of learning outcomes — potentially even automated, so an applicant can emphasize a specific skill like project management.
I’m not thinking that we will observe an academic earthquake, but… we will… think about our study programme… in a more modular way.
