Skills for the AI revolution — critical thinking and pre-AI skills
At the basic level, education should focus on critical thinking and being a conscious user of AI — not taking everything it produces for granted and being aware of hallucinations. Beyond that, students need the ability to track AI’s progress so their knowledge of its possibilities and limitations stays current. Although problems like hallucination may be solved within a few years, during this transitional period universities should still maintain „pre-AI” skills so that graduates are not over-reliant on the technology and can navigate the world if it fails — much as we no longer teach paper library catalogues now that search engines do the job.
We need to still teach our students some skills that would make them safe from over-reliance of the AI technology.
