Show all perspectives; grade argumentation, not opinions
Academics hold knowledge to share, but the purpose of education is to convey various perspectives, skills and social competences — not the teacher’s personal views on concrete issues. In fields like political science, geopolitics, international relations or law it is easy to slip in one’s own opinion; instead Laidler shows all possible perspectives and how to approach a topic, because the more viewpoints a student knows, the better educated and socially enriched they become. He tells students not to be afraid to share their views, but to acknowledge other perspectives and strengthen their own with solid arguments — and professors should grade the quality of argumentation, never the political or ideological content. Interdisciplinarity limits the temptation to force others to think as we do, which matters in a polarized world.
The role of the academia is to show all the possibilities and never be limited to one way of thinking.
