Integrating AI thoughtfully and doubling down on human skills
The worst thing universities could do is fear AI or pretend it will go away; instead they should integrate it thoughtfully, responsibly and creatively. The key is not simply teaching how to use AI tools but when and why — making critical thinking, fact-checking and digital judgement essential, since AI can generate convincing but inaccurate outputs and students must verify information, assess sources and spot bias in technology and in themselves. As past revolutions reshaped behaviour, AI will too, perhaps more profoundly. Universities should teach AI literacy in a broad sense (how it works, its limits, ethical dilemmas, collaborating with AI, prompt design) while emphasizing uniquely human skills — creativity, empathy, complex problem-solving, interdisciplinary thinking, teamwork and ethical reasoning.
Universities must teach students not only how to use AI, but maybe more how to navigate the world shaped by AI.
