What skills should future universities teach their students in light of the AI revolution?

Summary

Students need a hybrid skill set. First, a foundational understanding of AI itself — how algorithms work, what data is used, and where risks and biases originate — without everyone needing to be a programmer, but with the ability to critically assess AI systems. Data literacy and computational thinking are equally important across sectors. The most valuable skills, however, will be profoundly human: critical reasoning, creativity, ethical judgment, complex problem-solving, emotional intelligence and communication. Also essential is „learning how to learn” — meta-skills like cognitive flexibility and self-monitoring — alongside ethical literacy and responsibility for the dilemmas AI raises around privacy, fairness and accountability.

The most valuable skill in an AI-rich world will be profoundly human.
