Critical thinking vs. specialization — two sides of the same coin
The question
Are critical thinking and ethical reasoning becoming more important than technical specialization?
Watch
Summary
Against the view that critical and ethical reasoning are displacing technical specialization, Hohol argues that the two are two sides of the same coin. Producing knowledge and better theories requires specialization, and — contrary to popular opinion — specialists are needed even more than before, because their expertise is not so easily replaced by AI. At the same time, ethical and good reasoning are simply valid reasoning, which drives specialization and motivates specialists to engage in socially relevant projects and popularize their knowledge. Critical thinking is therefore as necessary as specialization, and each depends on the other.
Both of the things… could be two sides of the same coin.
